Dairy-Free Certification

A rigorous dairy-free claim requires manufacture in a fully separated environment with no dairy present in the production area and controlled air quality. Certified products contain no detectable dairy, are suitable for people with dairy allergies, and do not carry “may contain dairy” disclaimers.

It is important to distinguish dairy-free from lactose-free. Lactose-free products lack lactose but may still include dairy ingredients. Dairy-free certification confirms the complete absence of dairy components, protecting consumers with allergies and dietary restrictions.

Dairy-Free Certification process
  1. Producer claims

    Applicants submit documented evidence that facility procedures prevent dairy contamination. A detailed application describes production processes, zoning, sanitation, and allergen controls.

  2. Accredited laboratory testing

    Representative samples are tested in ISO/IEC 17025 laboratories recognized under the ILAC MRA to verify no detectable dairy proteins in finished products.

  3. Independent third-party review

    An ACS Canada auditor evaluates the application and lab results and confirms that controls meet program criteria before approval is granted.

  4. Ongoing compliance

    Approval is valid for one year with renewal audits and surveillance to maintain continuous conformity and consumer safety.

These requirements mean only facilities with robust allergen controls and verified testing achieve ACS Canada Dairy-Free Certification.
