ISO 56002 is a innovation management system, lets start from some major definitions in this subject. what is innovation and what is management system?

1-What is Innovation:

As considered according to Schumpeter innovation occurred either when:

i) new good was introduced,

ii) new method of production was adapted, iii) entry to new market was established,

iv) new supply was used or v) new way of organizational structure had been adapted(Godin).

An innovation baseline identifying that industrial innovation includes the technical, design, manufacturing, management and commercial activities involved in the marketing of new (or improved) product or the first commercial use of a new (or improved) process or equipment (C. Freeman).

A more global definition offered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is that: innovation consists of all those scientific, technical, commercial and financial steps necessary for the successful development and marketing of new or improved manufacturing products, the commercial use of new or improved processes or equipment or the introduction of new approach to a social service.

2-Types of innovation

Goffin & Mitchell refer to types of innovation as dimensions of innovation and identify product, service, process and business process innovation. Accordingly product innovation is considered as a first dimension of innovation and service innovation is regarded independently as a second dimension as it can create services enabling differentiation of products compared to competitors.

Process innovation refers to new or enhanced production process in the manufacturing also it is considered as new or significantly improved methods of logistics, delivery or distribution by adapting this view from the manual where it stands as “implementation of a new or significantly improved production or delivery method which includes significant changes in techniques, equipment and/or software.

Improvement other than that directly affecting manufacturing (faster transactions, improved supply chain) is considered separately under business process innovation. Actually, Business process innovation is considered to be the improvement of any business processes apart from the actual manufacturing.

3-What is innovation management systems

According to Tang definition, a management system is defined as “organizational structure, responsibilities, procedures, practices, activities and resources needed for the development, implementation, achievement and maintenance of an organizational policies and objectives”. Innovation management systems can therefore be described as structured and regularly practiced ways of running organizational activities contributing to its innovativeness capacity and performance.

And finally, standards are developed to normalize technical knowledge on relevant issues to obtain uniformity in how the processes are conducted in the companies and organizations.
