A company called Eagle Protect PBC has submitted a Citizen Petition to the FDA requesting a ban on vinyl (PVC) disposable gloves for food handling in the U.S.
The petition argues that PVC gloves may:
-Tear more easily than other glove types
-Contain chemical additives like phthalates that could leach into food
These concerns are backed by studies, especially in fast-food and food-service environments. However, the FDA has not banned PVC gloves, the petition is currently under review. Historically, the FDA has rejected similar petitions, including a 2023 request to ban certain phthalates in food packaging. This petition reopens a critical conversation about food safety standards and the regulation of food-contact materials.
What’s your take? Should the FDA move forward on this?
